Product Description
The Victron Centaur Charger 12/50(3) is a three-output battery charger for 12V systems, delivering 50A total charge current split across three independent outputs. It accepts AC input from 120 to 240V, so the same unit works on shore supplies in the UK, Europe or North America without manual adjustment.
Key features
- Charge current, 50A total, split across three outputs for 12V battery banks
- AC input range, 120 to 240V, no manual switching required
- Charging algorithm, fully automatic bulk, absorption and float stages
- Multiple outputs, three isolated outputs for simultaneous charging of separate battery banks
- Battery compatibility, flooded, gel and AGM lead-acid chemistries
- Protection, microprocessor-controlled with reverse polarity, short circuit and overheating protection
How it charges
Bulk charge delivers maximum current to bring the battery to around 80% capacity quickly. Absorption then holds voltage constant while current tapers off, completing the charge without overcharging. Float mode maintains full charge without gassing or electrolyte loss, useful where the charger stays connected for long periods.
Temperature compensation
With an external battery temperature sensor connected, the charger adjusts charge voltage for battery temperature. This avoids undercharging in cold conditions and overcharging in hot ones, relevant for engine rooms or exposed enclosures.
Applications
Suited to marine vessels with multiple battery banks such as starter, service, bow thruster or generator batteries. Also used in motorhomes and coaches for chassis and habitation batteries, off-grid cabins on generator or shore power, commercial vehicles with auxiliary systems, and industrial or telecoms backup power where batteries need continuous maintenance.
Installation notes
Fit by a qualified electrician or experienced marine or vehicle electrician familiar with DC battery systems. Fuse the AC supply correctly and use appropriately rated cable and fusing on the DC outputs for a 50A charge current. Mount in a ventilated location away from water ingress. Marine installs should follow relevant BMEA or RYA wiring guidance, and battery chemistry should be confirmed before selecting a charge profile.
