Product Description
The Victron SmartShunt 500A/50mV is a standalone battery monitor that tracks state of charge, consumed amp hours and voltage without needing a separate display. It pairs directly with the VictronConnect app over Bluetooth, giving installers and off-grid builders accurate battery data without the cost of a full BMV monitor.
Key features of this smart shunt battery monitor
- Shunt rating, 500A continuous current with a 50mV shunt drop, suitable for 12V, 24V and 48V battery banks.
- Bluetooth connectivity, built-in Bluetooth links to VictronConnect on iOS and Android for live readings and configuration.
- Monitored data, state of charge (%), consumed amp hours, voltage, current, power and time remaining.
- Battery chemistry support, works with lead-acid (AGM, gel, flooded) and lithium (LiFePO4) batteries.
- Compact form factor, shunt-only design removes the need for a separate display, saving panel space.
- VE.Direct port, connects to Victron GX devices, MPPT solar charge controllers and other compatible equipment.
How it works
The 50mV shunt drop at 500A gives the SmartShunt a precise reference for measuring current flowing in and out of the battery. That data is processed internally and sent over Bluetooth to VictronConnect, where readings and history can be reviewed and monitoring parameters adjusted. No display unit is needed, though one can be added later.
Through the VE.Direct port, the SmartShunt can feed state-of-charge data into a Victron GX device such as a Cerbo GX, making it visible on the VRM portal and usable for load shedding or generator start logic elsewhere in the system.
Accurate SoC tracking depends on setup. Battery capacity, charge efficiency factor, Peukert exponent and tail current threshold can all be adjusted for the specific battery bank in use.
Applications
- Off-grid solar systems needing SoC monitoring without a dedicated display panel.
- Marine and narrowboat installations where panel space is limited.
- Motorhome and campervan leisure battery banks on 12V or 24V systems.
- Victron systems using a Cerbo GX or other GX device via VE.Direct.
- Retrofit monitoring on existing battery banks where a full BMV is not required.
What's in the box
- Victron SmartShunt 500A/50mV unit
- VE.Direct cable
- Connection cable for battery negative
- Documentation and quick-start guide
Installation notes
The SmartShunt fits in the negative battery lead, between the battery negative terminal and all other negative connections. All negative return current must pass through the shunt for accurate readings. Bypassing it with a direct chassis ground will give incorrect results. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician or experienced DC systems installer, and by an MCS-accredited installer where the system forms part of a solar PV installation.
