Product Description
The Victron SmartShunt 500A is a standalone battery shunt monitor that tracks state of charge, consumed amp-hours, voltage, current and power without needing a separate display unit. It connects to the VictronConnect app via Bluetooth, so there's no display head to fit or wire in. Built for 12V, 24V and 48V battery systems, it suits off-grid, marine and vehicle installations.
Key features
- Monitoring, state of charge, consumed amp-hours, voltage, current and power in real time
- Connectivity, built-in Bluetooth to the VictronConnect app on iOS and Android, no extra hardware required
- Current rating, 500A continuous with a 50mV shunt for measurement accuracy across the load range
- Battery compatibility, 12V, 24V and 48V systems, including lithium, AGM, gel and flooded lead-acid
- Data output, VE.Direct for connection to Victron GX devices, MPPT controllers and other compatible equipment
- Configuration, battery capacity, Peukert exponent, charge efficiency factor and tail current all set via VictronConnect
Product overview
The SmartShunt puts the monitoring intelligence inside the shunt body itself, removing the need for a separate BMV display head or the cable routing that goes with it. All readings and history, including deepest discharge, cycle count and time since last full charge, are viewed through VictronConnect.
The 500A rating and 50mV shunt drop match Victron's BMV series, so accuracy holds across both high-current discharge and light standby loads. Correct state-of-charge tracking relies on the battery parameters being set up properly in the app. A VE.Direct port lets the SmartShunt feed a Victron Cerbo GX or Venus GX for centralised monitoring.
Where a local display is wanted, the SmartShunt works with an optional Victron GX Touch or a connected GX device screen. It is not compatible with the BMV-700 or BMV-712 display heads. Power is drawn from the battery being monitored, with minimal standby draw.
Applications
Suited to off-grid solar battery systems, marine and narrowboat installs where display space is tight, motorhome and campervan leisure battery banks, Victron GX system builds, retrofit monitoring where new display cabling isn't practical, and light commercial battery systems up to 500A continuous.
What's in the box
- Victron SmartShunt 500A unit
- Connection cable for battery negative and sense wiring
- Documentation and quick-start guide
Installation notes
The SmartShunt fits in the negative battery line, between the battery negative terminal and every other negative connection in the system. All negative loads and charge sources must return through the shunt for accurate readings; wiring it incorrectly gives inaccurate state-of-charge data. Fitting should be done by a qualified electrician or experienced installer, and by an MCS-accredited installer where it forms part of a solar PV system.
