Product Description
The Victron Skylla-TG 48/50 is a transformer-based 48V battery charger delivering 50A output, built for continuous-duty charging in marine, off-grid and industrial installations. It runs from a 230V single-phase AC supply and is a strong choice as a marine battery charger for large 48V house battery banks needing galvanic isolation.
Key features
- Output, 48V nominal battery voltage at 50A output current.
- AC input, 230V single-phase supply for mains or generator connection.
- Charging profile, four-stage adaptive algorithm covering bulk, absorption, float and storage.
- Temperature compensation, adjusts output voltage based on battery temperature to protect cell life.
- Adjustable settings, charge voltage and current can be set to suit different battery chemistries and bank sizes.
- Build, metal enclosure rated for industrial environments, weighing 10 kg.
- Remote control, on/off and charge current can be adjusted via an external signal input.
Product overview
The Skylla-TG range uses a transformer-based design rather than switch-mode circuitry, giving galvanic isolation between the AC input and DC output. This is a requirement in many marine and industrial installations. The 48/50 variant is suited to large lead-acid or gel battery banks where controlled, high-current recharging matters.
The four-stage cycle runs automatically. Bulk delivers maximum current. Absorption holds voltage steady while current tapers off. Float keeps the battery topped up without overcharging, and storage mode drops the float voltage for batteries left idle for long periods. A connected temperature sensor lets the charger adjust absorption and float voltages, which helps where ambient temperatures swing widely.
Remote inputs let the charger sit inside a larger control scheme, including generator start/stop logic, and current can be reduced remotely to manage generator or shore power loading.
Applications
- Large off-grid battery banks needing high-current recharge from generator or mains.
- Marine vessels with 48V house systems where galvanic isolation is required.
- Industrial and commercial backup power with lead-acid or gel battery banks.
- Telecom and data centre 48V standby systems.
- Motorhomes, coaches and specialist vehicles with high-capacity 48V auxiliary batteries.
What's in the box
- Victron Skylla-TG 48/50 battery charger unit
Installation notes
Fit by a qualified electrician or accredited installer. Connect to a 230V single-phase AC supply protected by an appropriately rated breaker, with DC output wiring correctly fused and sized for 50A continuous current. Allow adequate ventilation. For marine use, check that the galvanic isolation meets the relevant classification society or standard, and fit a battery temperature sensor where ambient temperature varies significantly.
