Product Description

The Victron Smart BMS 12/200 is a battery management system built for 12V LiFePO4 battery systems carrying up to 200A continuous load current. It guards the battery against over-charge, over-discharge and short circuit conditions, and links directly into Victron's VE.Bus and VE.Direct ecosystem. It suits marine, vehicle and off-grid installations that need a dedicated BMS rather than a basic contactor setup.

Key features of the Victron Smart BMS 12/200

  • Continuous current, 200A on 12V lithium battery systems.
  • Cell-level protection, guards against over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current and short circuit.
  • VE.Bus integration, works directly with Victron MultiPlus and Quattro inverter/chargers for coordinated charge and load control.
  • Load disconnect output, controls a Victron Battery Protect or similar device to shed non-essential loads before damage occurs.
  • Pre-alarm output, gives advance warning before a full disconnect, allowing a controlled shutdown.
  • VE.Smart networking, shares data with other Victron devices over Bluetooth.
  • Charge disconnect output, signals compatible Victron chargers and solar charge controllers to stop charging when required.

How it protects the system

The Smart BMS 12/200 sits between the lithium battery bank and the rest of the 12V system, watching cell status and acting as the main protection layer. When cell voltages move outside safe limits, it signals connected Victron devices to stop charging or disconnect loads before damage occurs. Separate charge disconnect and load disconnect outputs mean the system can respond differently depending on whether the fault is over-charge or over-discharge.

The pre-alarm output suits installations where a sudden disconnect would cause problems, such as a vessel running navigation electronics or a vehicle with sensitive loads. It gives connected devices or a relay time to shut down before the BMS takes action, and can be wired to a buzzer, indicator light or a Victron Cerbo GX for VRM portal monitoring.

Because the unit talks natively to MultiPlus and Quattro inverter/chargers over VE.Bus, there is no separate BMS communication cable or third-party interface needed. The inverter/charger responds directly to charge permission signals, keeping the wiring simple.

Applications

  • Marine vessels with 12V LiFePO4 house battery banks and Victron inverter/charger installations.
  • Motorhomes and campervans running 12V lithium systems with high current demands.
  • Off-grid cabins and remote power systems using 12V LiFePO4 storage.
  • Vehicle-based power systems such as ambulances, expedition vehicles and broadcast vehicles requiring reliable protection at high current.
  • Victron-based systems needing native BMS-to-inverter communication without a third-party interface.

Installation notes

Install with a qualified electrician or system integrator experienced with lithium battery systems. At 200A continuous current, all cabling, fusing and busbar connections must be correctly rated and torqued. The BMS must be configured to match the cell count and voltage thresholds of the connected LiFePO4 battery, as incorrect configuration can cause inadequate protection or nuisance disconnects. For marine use, confirm relevant NMEA or RCD Directive requirements with the installer. This unit is not suitable for lead-acid battery chemistries.
