Product Description

The Victron Lead Carbon 12V/160Ah battery is a deep-cycle lead acid battery with carbon-enhanced negative plates, built for cyclic and standby use where partial state of charge operation is common. It suits off-grid solar systems, backup power installations and marine or vehicle applications needing a reliable, maintenance-tolerant battery.

Key features

  • Plate construction, carbon-enhanced negative plates reduce sulphation and extend cycle life compared to standard AGM or flooded lead acid batteries.
  • Capacity, 12V nominal voltage with 160Ah capacity, providing 1,920Wh of stored energy per unit.
  • Terminals, M8 threaded insert terminals allow secure, torque-controlled connections for high-current cabling.
  • Partial state of charge performance, performs well under PSoC conditions, suiting solar systems with irregular charging profiles.
  • Charger compatibility, works with Victron chargers, inverter/chargers and MPPT solar charge controllers using standard lead acid charge profiles.
  • Weight, 55kg, reflecting the dense construction typical of deep-cycle lead carbon cells.

Product overview

Lead carbon batteries use a blend of activated carbon mixed into the negative active material of the lead plates. This reduces the build-up of lead sulphate crystals during partial state of charge cycling, a common cause of premature failure in lead acid batteries used in solar systems. The result is longer service life and steadier capacity retention over time.

The M8 threaded insert terminals are a practical advantage in professional installations. They accept bolted lugs directly rather than relying on post-style connections, giving a more secure, vibration-resistant joint. This matters in mobile or marine installations and anywhere cable management and terminal integrity count.

At 160Ah, this battery is often used as a building block in larger battery banks. Units can be wired in parallel to raise capacity, or in series-parallel to reach higher system voltages. Victron's battery management and monitoring tools work with lead carbon chemistry using standard lead acid settings.

Applications

  • Off-grid solar storage with frequent partial state of charge cycling.
  • Backup power systems needing a deep-cycle battery with extended service life.
  • Marine and leisure vehicle installations needing bolted-terminal batteries.
  • Telecom and remote monitoring sites with irregular charge and discharge patterns.
  • Multi-battery banks in 12V, 24V or 48V off-grid systems.

What's in the box

Installation notes

Fitting should be carried out by a qualified electrician or experienced solar installer. At 55kg, this battery needs appropriate handling equipment and a ventilated enclosure. Cabling must be correctly rated for the system's maximum current draw, with M8 bolted lugs torqued correctly on the threaded insert terminals. When connecting multiple batteries in a bank, follow Victron's guidance on balanced cabling for even charge and discharge distribution across all units.
