Product Description
The SMA Sunny Tripower X 20kW is a three phase grid tie inverter built for commercial PV systems and large residential installations. It runs three independent MPP trackers, accepts up to 1000VDC on the input side, and sits in an IP65 enclosure suitable for outdoor mounting. An integrated system manager adds monitoring and control across multiple inverters without extra hardware.

Built-in system functions
SMA ShadeFix improves yield during partial shading by optimising at the inverter level, without module-level optimisers. SMA ArcFix provides active DC arc-fault detection. The integrated system manager can monitor and control up to five SMA inverters plus one energy meter, handling dynamic power control and feed-in management for systems up to 135kVA. Communication runs over Ethernet, local WLAN, or RS485, using SMA Modbus and SunSpec Modbus protocols, with direct access to Sunny Portal via ennexOS for remote monitoring.
Product family
This 20kW model shares its platform and footprint with the 12kW, 15kW, and 25kW variants in the Sunny Tripower X range. The three MPP trackers give independent string management, which helps on roofs with mixed orientations or shading.
Applications
Suited to commercial rooftop and ground-mounted PV, large residential solar arrays, multi-inverter sites needing centralised monitoring, and installations with partial shading or several roof aspects.
Installation notes
Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrical engineer or MCS-accredited solar installer. Connection at this power level requires G99 notification and DNO approval in the UK. DC wiring, string fusing, AC protection and earthing must follow IET Wiring Regulations and SMA's installation manual, with commissioning completed via SMA's commissioning tools before the system is switched on.
