Product Description
The Victron MultiPlus 48/1600/20-16 combines an inverter, a battery charger and an AC transfer switch in a single 48V unit with 230V AC output. It suits off-grid systems, backup power setups and marine or vehicle installations where space is tight and reliability matters.
Key features
- Inverter output, 1600VA from a 48V DC input, compatible with 48V lead-acid and lithium battery banks.
- Battery charger, 20A output with a three-stage adaptive charging algorithm for a range of battery chemistries.
- AC transfer switch, 16A, passing through shore power or generator input and switching to inverter operation if mains supply is lost.
- VE.Bus interface, allows parallel and three-phase configuration with additional MultiPlus units, plus integration with Victron GX devices.
- PowerAssist, draws extra power from the battery bank when AC load demand exceeds the available input current.
- Weight, 10 kg, wall-mountable.
Product overview
When AC input is present, the MultiPlus charges the battery bank and passes power through to connected loads. If that input fails or is disconnected, the transfer switch operates in under 20 milliseconds, keeping critical loads running without a noticeable break.
The VE.Bus interface is what makes this unit scale. Several MultiPlus units can run in parallel for more capacity, or be set up for split-phase or three-phase operation. Paired with a Victron Cerbo GX or another GX device, the system feeds into the VRM monitoring platform, giving installers and owners remote visibility of performance.
PowerAssist helps where shore power or generator capacity is limited. The unit watches AC input current and, as loads approach the set limit, draws the balance from the battery rather than tripping the supply. That lets a smaller generator or a restricted shore connection support larger loads than it otherwise could.
Applications
- Off-grid residential and cabin systems with a 48V battery bank.
- Backup power for critical loads needing fast transfer from mains to battery.
- Marine installations requiring 230V AC output from a 48V DC house bank.
- Mobile and vehicle-based systems, including expedition vehicles and larger motorhomes.
- Off-grid systems planned for parallel or three-phase expansion via VE.Bus.
What's in the box
- 1 x Victron MultiPlus 48/1600/20-16 230V VE.Bus inverter charger unit
Installation notes
Fitting should be done by a qualified electrician or accredited installer familiar with DC battery systems and AC wiring regulations. The 48V DC operation needs correct cable sizing, fusing and battery connection practices. For grid-connected or generator-tied setups, check compliance with UK wiring regulations and, where relevant, G98 or G99 requirements. VE.Bus configuration should be carried out using Victron's VEConfigure software, and the unit should not be installed in an enclosed space without adequate ventilation.
