Product Description

The Victron Centaur Charger 24/16 is a three-output, mains-powered battery charger for marine, vehicle and off-grid systems. It supplies 16A of charge current at 24V to three independently managed battery banks, and accepts AC input from 120 to 240V for use across different mains supplies.

Key features

  • Charge current, 16A at 24V across three separate output channels for simultaneous multi-bank charging.
  • Input range, 120 to 240V AC, suitable for UK, European and North American supplies.
  • Charge algorithm, four-stage adaptive cycle (bulk, absorption, float, storage).
  • Battery compatibility, gel, AGM, flooded lead-acid and calcium types via selectable charge profiles.
  • Temperature compensation, output voltage adjusts automatically to ambient conditions.
  • Weight, 4.3 kg.
  • Battery safe mode, protects against deep discharge when connected to a battery under load.

How the charge cycle works

During bulk, the charger delivers full current until the battery reaches absorption voltage. Absorption then holds voltage steady while current tapers off, so the battery reaches full charge without overcharging. Float and storage modes hold a safe resting voltage for batteries left connected over long periods, which matters on vessels and vehicles that sit idle between uses.

Three independent outputs

Each of the three outputs is managed according to its own state of charge, so a starter battery and one or two auxiliary banks can be charged at the same time without separate chargers or manual switching. The 120 to 240V input tolerance means the same unit works from a UK shore power point, a European marina or a North American supply.

Applications

Suited to marine vessels with separate starter, bow thruster and domestic banks; motorhomes and coaches with chassis and habitation batteries; off-grid cabins and site offices on shore power or generator supply; and commercial vehicles with auxiliary systems for refrigeration or tail-lift equipment.

Installation notes

Fit by a qualified electrician or marine electrical engineer, wired to a 120 to 240V AC mains supply in accordance with local regulations (BS 7671 in the UK, or relevant ISO/NMEA standards for marine work). Allow adequate ventilation and make sure DC output cabling is rated for the charge current. Select the correct battery type via the charge profile before commissioning.
