Product Description

The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 24/12-30A (360W) is a galvanically isolated DC-DC charger that charges a 12V service battery from a 24V vehicle or system supply. It suits professional vehicle conversions, marine installations and off-grid systems where two battery banks need to stay electrically separate. Bluetooth is built in, so setup and monitoring run through the VictronConnect app.

How it works

A high-frequency transformer provides full galvanic isolation between the 24V input and 12V output. In vehicles and boats, two separate chassis grounds can otherwise create ground loops or feed noise into audio and navigation equipment. The isolated design means the two battery banks share no electrical path other than the intended charge current.

Engine detection watches the input voltage and only switches on the charger once it rises past a configurable threshold, showing the alternator is running. That stops the service battery pulling down the starter battery when the engine is off. The threshold is adjustable in VictronConnect, so it works with both standard and smart alternators.

VictronConnect also gives access to battery type selection, absorption and float voltages, and live current and voltage readings. A VE.Direct connection lets the charger feed data into a GX device or Cerbo GX for centralised monitoring.

Installation notes

Fitting should be done by a qualified electrician or experienced system integrator familiar with DC wiring. Cable sizing needs to suit the input current draw at 24V and the 30A output, and the unit should be mounted somewhere ventilated and away from water ingress. Marine installs should follow NMEA or relevant classification society wiring guidance. Set the engine detection threshold in VictronConnect before commissioning, to match the alternator and battery system in use.
