Product Description

The Victron BlueSolar MPPT 250/70-Tr VE.Can is a high-voltage MPPT solar charge controller built for larger off-grid and battery charging installations. It accepts up to 250V PV open-circuit voltage and delivers up to 70A of charge current, so a single unit can handle a sizeable solar array. A VE.Can interface lets it sit on a Victron system network for monitoring and control.

Victron MPPT charge controller features

  • Maximum PV input voltage, 250V, allowing longer PV strings with fewer parallel runs.
  • Maximum charge current, 70A output, suited to larger battery banks in off-grid and backup systems.
  • VE.Can interface, connects to Victron GX devices, Color Control GX and other VE.Can-compatible equipment for system monitoring.
  • True MPPT tracking, continuously tracks the maximum power point of the array across varying irradiance and temperature.
  • TR connection, screw terminal wiring for secure, permanent installation.
  • Battery compatibility, works with lead-acid (flooded, AGM, gel) and lithium-ion battery chemistries, with charge profiles configured to match.

Why the 250V rating matters

The 250V maximum input voltage is the defining spec for system design. It lets installers wire PV modules into longer series strings, cutting cable losses and simplifying array wiring compared with lower-voltage controllers. Actual charge power at 70A depends on system battery voltage.

VE.Can networking

VE.Can is Victron's CAN-based communication bus. Linking this controller to a GX device, such as a Cerbo GX, gives visibility of PV yield, battery state, charge current and controller status through the VRM portal or a local display. Several VE.Can devices can be daisy-chained on the same bus, useful on sites with multiple charge sources.

Charge algorithm settings are configured through the VictronConnect app over Bluetooth, using a VE.Direct Bluetooth dongle, or directly through a connected GX device, allowing absorption voltage, float voltage, equalisation and battery type to be set for the battery bank in use.

Applications

  • Large off-grid solar systems with 24V or 48V battery banks needing high charge current.
  • Professional Victron builds where VE.Can integration and centralised GX monitoring are required.
  • Marine and vehicle installations using high-voltage PV arrays where one high-current controller replaces several smaller units.
  • Commercial and agricultural off-grid sites with large PV arrays and significant daily energy demand.
  • Multi-controller installations networked together on a VE.Can bus.

Installation notes

This controller operates at PV voltages up to 250V DC, a hazardous level, so installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician or accredited solar installer experienced with high-voltage DC systems. PV string open-circuit voltage must not exceed 250V under any temperature condition, including cold-weather peaks. Battery and PV wiring must be fused and sized correctly for 70A continuous current, and VE.Can connections need proper RJ45 termination with a 120-ohm terminator at each end of the bus.
