Product Description

The Victron Orion-Tr 24/12-5 is a non-isolated DC-DC converter that steps a 24V supply down to a regulated 12V output at up to 5A, rated at 60W. It suits mobile, marine and off-grid systems that need a stable 12V feed drawn from a 24V battery or bus.

Key features

  • Conversion, 24V input to 12V output at up to 5A continuous (60W rated power).
  • Design, non-isolated, giving a compact and lightweight unit at 90g.
  • Input range, wide enough to cope with normal voltage swings on a 24V system.
  • Output, adjustable, so the 12V rail can be tuned to a specific load.
  • Size, compact enclosure suited to panel boards, lockers or equipment bays.

Product overview

The Orion-Tr 24/12-5 covers one of the more common jobs in dual-voltage electrical systems: running 12V loads from a 24V supply without fitting a second battery bank. That comes up often in commercial vehicles, motorhomes, narrowboats and off-grid cabins built around a 24V main system with 12V ancillaries attached.

Being non-isolated, it shares a common ground between input and output. That's fine for most single-vehicle or single-vessel wiring where the chassis or hull ground runs throughout. Where galvanic isolation is required between circuits, such as some marine installs or multi-battery setups with separate grounds, the isolated Orion-Tr variant should be used instead.

At 60W and 90g it sits among the smaller units in the Orion-Tr range. The adjustable output is useful for compensating cable voltage drop or matching a load that needs a precise supply voltage within the 12V band.

Applications

  • Powering 12V instruments, radios or control panels from a 24V vehicle system.
  • Supplying 12V accessories on narrowboats, canal boats or motorhomes with a 24V battery bank.
  • Feeding 12V control circuits or sensors in off-grid solar setups running a 24V bus.
  • Providing a regulated 12V rail for lighting or USB charging on 24V commercial vehicles.
  • Integrating older 12V equipment into an upgraded 24V electrical system.

What's included

  • 1 x Victron Orion-Tr 24/12-5 (60W) non-isolated DC-DC converter

Installation notes

This converter is non-isolated, with a shared common ground between input and output. Confirm that a common ground configuration suits your installation before fitting it. Wiring on both input and output should be correctly rated for the current involved, with fuses sized appropriately at the source. Fitting should be done by a qualified electrician or someone competent with DC electrical systems, and marine installers should check whether their vessel's wiring standard calls for galvanic isolation before choosing this model.
