The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 24/24-12A is a galvanically isolated DC-DC battery charger for 24V dual-battery systems, delivering up to 12A (280W) and controlled via Bluetooth. It suits vehicles, boats and off-grid setups where a starter battery needs to stay electrically separate from a service or leisure battery.

How it works

Unlike a basic DC-DC converter, the Orion-Tr Smart runs a full charging algorithm rather than simply stepping voltage. At 280W it can maintain a 24V service battery from a 24V vehicle or vessel system without the two banks sharing a common ground. That isolation matters most in marine settings, where stray current corrosion is a real risk, and anywhere two chassis grounds need to stay independent.

Charge voltage, absorption time, float voltage and tail current are all adjustable through VictronConnect to match the battery on the output side. The unit can also run in load output mode as a stabilised 24V supply instead of a charger. It links into Victron's VE.Smart network over Bluetooth, sharing voltage and temperature data with other Victron devices for coordinated charging.

Installation notes

Fit this with correctly sized cable and fusing on both input and output sides, matched to the rated current. Marine installs should follow BMEA or equivalent wiring standards, and the unit needs a ventilated location away from water ingress. For lithium outputs, check the charge profile in VictronConnect before commissioning. It is not grid-connected, so G98 or G99 compliance does not apply, though a competent person should review any wider system integration.
