The Victron SmartSolar MPPT 250/60-MC4 is a solar charge controller built for larger off-grid and hybrid systems. It accepts a maximum PV open-circuit voltage of 250V and delivers up to 60A of charge current, with MC4 connectors fitted directly to the PV input.

Array sizing

At 48V the 60A rating corresponds to a PV array power of approximately 3,250W. At 24V the practical limit is around 1,600W, and at 12V around 800W. The array must be sized to the target battery voltage to stay within these limits, and the PV open-circuit voltage must not exceed 250V under any temperature condition, including cold-weather Voc rise.

Applications

Suited to off-grid cabins and rural properties running 24V or 48V systems, marine and narrowboat installations using higher-voltage strings to cut cable losses, and mobile or vehicle-based setups such as HGVs and expedition vehicles. It also fits commercial off-grid telecom and remote monitoring sites, and hybrid installations paired with Victron MultiPlus or Quattro inverter-chargers through a GX device.

Installation notes

This unit operates at PV voltages up to 250V DC, which is hazardous. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician or MCS-accredited installer, with correct fusing and cable sizing on both PV and battery sides. Where the system feeds a grid-tied inverter, check G98 or G99 compliance as applicable.
