Product Description
The Victron Energy 500A/50mV shunt is a precision current measurement component for battery monitoring and energy management systems. It works with compatible Victron battery monitors and BMV series devices, measuring charge and discharge current accurately in 12V, 24V and 48V DC systems. Suitable for solar, off-grid, marine and vehicle installations that need reliable current sensing.
Key features
- Rated current, 500A continuous, with a 50mV voltage drop at full rated current.
- Shunt resistance, 0.1 milliohms.
- Compatibility, works with Victron BMV battery monitors and other devices accepting a 50mV shunt input signal.
- Build, compact construction suitable for battery enclosures, distribution boards and switchgear panels.
- Weight, 0.3kg, straightforward to mount in tight spaces.
How it works
A shunt inserts a known, very low resistance into the main current path. The voltage drop across it is proportional to current flowing through it. At 500A, this shunt produces exactly 50mV, which a connected battery monitor reads and converts into a current figure. Because the 50mV standard is widely used, this shunt also suits third-party monitors that accept a 50mV input.
This is the standard replacement or additional shunt Victron supplies for the BMV-700, BMV-702, BMV-712 and SmartShunt product lines when a separate shunt is needed. It connects via the dedicated shunt terminals on those monitors using the cable harness supplied with the monitor kit.
Applications
- Battery current monitoring in off-grid solar power systems.
- Current sensing in marine and narrowboat 12V or 24V house battery banks.
- Motorhome and campervan leisure battery monitoring installations.
- Replacement or spare shunt for Victron BMV battery monitor installations.
Installation notes
The shunt fits into the negative main cable between the battery bank negative terminal and the system negative busbar, with loads and chargers connected on the system side. Only the battery negative should connect directly to the shunt battery terminal, as incorrect wiring produces inaccurate readings. Confirm the shunt is rated for your system's maximum continuous current before fitting, and torque connections correctly.
