Orchard Care Homes Switch to LED Down Lights and Microwave Sensors

Ledison LED Lights supplied and installed LED round panels with emergency battery packs and microwave sensors for Orchard Care Homes, a facility housing elderly residents including dementia patients.

The brief was specific. Residents needed warm white light with a high colour rendering index, delivered evenly enough to avoid shadows that could cause agitation or confusion. Care home lighting has a direct effect on mood, behaviour and sleep patterns in elderly residents, and night time lighting needed the same level of attention as daytime lighting.

Ledison specified 3000K warm white LED round panels with a colour rendering index of 90, a spectrum suited to hospitality-style applications. The panels were fitted into the ceiling with concealed indirect lighting and a three-level dimming system, giving staff control over light levels through the day and night without sudden changes that could unsettle residents. The ceiling-mounted approach worked particularly well in corridors, where consistent light quality mattered most.

Emergency lighting was built in using NI-CD battery backup and dimmable LED drivers. One example: an emergency driver with NI-CD battery paired with a dimmable LED driver, its DC output controlling an 18W LED round panel (6 inch).

Result

The Housing Association overseeing the care homes reported electricity cost savings of over 80% following the installation. Orchard Care Homes were satisfied with the calm, consistent ambiance the lighting created for residents, achieved through a straightforward LED retrofit supplied by Ledison LED Lights.
