LED Lighting Installation for John Lewis Car Park, Solihull

Voltacon was chosen to light the car parks at one of the largest shopping centres in Birmingham. The John Lewis car park in Solihull has approximately 2500 parking spaces and operates from 7am to 12am.

The customer wanted a lighting solution that would cut electricity use by up to 60%, reduce carbon footprint through green technology, and keep the existing Philips fittings to avoid sending them to landfill.

Voltacon's engineers developed a customised solution that reused the existing fittings, giving the customer quicker installation, adaptation of current fixtures, lower costs, and no fitting waste. Voltacon supplied a direct replacement LED T5 tube with an emergency pack and NI-CID battery that fits onto the reflector of the non-corrosive Philips fitting.

Phase One

The first phase involved replacing 870 five-foot CFL (fluorescent) tubes and 150 emergency kits. Voltacon completed the project to meet the latest lighting industry regulations within 7 working days, using a team of five NICEIC Approved and IPAF qualified electricians.

Voltacon's experience with large-scale LED lighting projects gave the customer confidence to award the full tender to Voltacon.

Phase Two

The second phase covers 1600 pieces of 4 foot T5 LED 15w tubes, with each Philips fixture rewired and modified to operate with a microwave sensor. The customer wanted reduced energy usage while maintaining safety for people using the car park.

By using dimmable T5 LED tubes, Voltacon increased the energy savings of the project by up to 90%. Voltacon designed and manufactured a solution that increases energy savings while still providing the lighting expected from a car park of this scale. When a pedestrian or car enters the car park, the LED lighting turns on fully for maximum safety and security. After 2 minutes have elapsed, the LED tube lighting dims down to 20% efficiency.
