Armstrong World Industries Ceilings UK Warehouse Shower Bay Lights Project

LED Shower Bay Lights

Ledison replaced 90 High Bay lights at an Armstrong World Industries Ceilings UK factory, swapping 400W SON high-bay lamps for 150W Shower Head LED Bay Lights.

Armstrong World Industries is a global manufacturer of industrial, commercial and residential ceilings. The UK factory wanted to cut lighting costs on its industrial roof without dropping below the lux levels required by industry regulations.

The problem with the old SON lamps

The old 400W high-pressure SON lamps wasted a large share of their energy. Of the lumen output, only around 60% was useful light. The rest was lost as heat inside the luminaire.

The installation

Ledison fitted 90 High Bay LED Lights rated at 150W, each producing over 17,000 lumens. The units use aluminium fins for better thermal conductivity. Measured 1 metre above the ground, luminous flux came to nearly 550 lux, meeting the lighting levels dictated by industry regulations.

The numbers

Over an 8 hour shift, the old setup worked out as follows:

Armstrong ceiling LED lights

  • 90 Bay Lights x 400W = 36,000W
  • 36,000W x 8H = 288kWh
  • 288kWh x £0.15 per unit = £43.20

With the 150W replacements, the same shift came to:

  • 90 Bay Lights x 150W = 13,500W
  • 13,500W x 8H = 108kWh
  • 108kWh x £0.15 per unit = £16.20

The switch cut lighting spend by 60% for the factory, per 8 hour shift.
