P&O Ferries Prefer Voltacon LED Lights for Cruise-ships and Ferries

Voltacon supplied LED lamps and tubes to P&O Cruises for use across their fleet of cruise-ships and ferries. The work covers PL LED lamps and T8 tubes fitted throughout deck car parks, restaurants and dining areas, corridors, sitting areas and refrigerated compartments.

P&O operate routes between Northern Ireland and Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and England, and between England and France, Belgium and Holland. The lamps and tubes supplied by Voltacon have been tested for safety and reliability at sea and approved for maritime use by the MOD.

Voltacon also handled the installation. The project spans eight ships in the P&O fleet, with a combined gross tonnage of over 708,000. Each ship had to remain operational throughout the work, so Voltacon retrofitted LED lamps and bulbs into the existing fixtures rather than replacing fittings outright. This kept disruption and cost down while still delivering the efficiency gains. The full project is estimated to take two years to complete.

Why it matters

P&O has been running passenger ferry services to the British Isles for almost two centuries and operates the largest fleet in the market. Switching to LED lighting across that many vessels cuts running costs and reduces the fleet's carbon footprint, while keeping the ships in service for the hundreds of thousands of passengers who use them each year.
