3000 LED Tubes For Defence Warship

Voltacon supplied and installed over 9,000 LED tubes, T5 and T8, on a Defence Warship in Portsmouth, UK, as part of an ongoing project that will total more than 15,000 LED tubes across Type 45 and Type 23 Destroyers and Aircraft Carriers.

The Ministry of Defence needed lighting tough enough for Royal Navy vessels and their cruise ships, built to strict quality and specification requirements for destroyers and other specialised ships. Different areas of each ship, above and below deck, needed lighting suited to their specific function.

Efficiency was a priority. Space for fittings was limited, many lights had to be installed in tight areas, and the lighting had to resist salt water and weather changes. The ship's diverse spaces included cabins, control rooms, recreational facilities, catering and cold rooms, and engine rooms, all subject to strict safety compliance.

Heat management was another key requirement. Lighting that produces less heat and draws less power reduces the load on a ship's cooling systems and cuts maintenance needs.

Ledison/Voltacon, an approved supplier to the Ministry of Defence, installed over 9,000 LED lights across every part of the ships, meeting the military requirements of six destroyers. The lighting covered cabins through to control rooms, improving safety and comfort while delivering long service life and strong weather resistance.

A digital dimmer with DALI driver was installed to manage the large lighting system, allowing automatic dimming and switching to be programmed and reprogrammed by room, extending service life across the installation.
