Voltacon replaced the 250W High-Pressure Sodium street lights at Cobham Services on the M25 with 100 Hyperion Cree LED Street Lights, each rated at 90W. The site sits between junctions 9 and 10, midway between Heathrow and Gatwick, and is operated by Extra with a food court, washrooms, retail units, a Days Inn hotel, a Business Centre, a Shell filling station and a lakeside terrace.

The car parks, covering both short-stay and long-stay areas, needed lighting that kept visitors and staff safe without running up energy costs. Dropping from 250W HPS units to 90W LED fittings cuts the wattage per light by more than 60%, while the Hyperion Cree units deliver a natural daylight colour temperature of 4000K across the parking areas.

Specification

Each fitting uses a perforated heatsink and cooling technology to raise lumen output and extend the life of the LED chips. The housing is built for exposed motorway conditions, with:

  • A slim, modern shape designed to resist strong winds
  • Robust aluminium housing
  • Stainless steel screws and bolts
  • Full weatherproofing for all conditions

Benefits

Extra chose integrated photocell sensors for 50% of the 100 lights installed, so those fittings switch on automatically as daylight fades, adding further energy savings on top of the wattage reduction.

LED street lights are more resistant to damage than HPS alternatives and last longer in service. They also switch on instantly, even in cold weather, with no warm-up period, and produce a steady light with no flicker. Ledison Lighting backs the Hyperion Cree LED Street Light with a seven-year warranty.
