► LEDISONs Lighting Dictionary

Luminous Flux: The amount of light emitted from a light source; Unit: Lumen (Im).

Colour Rendering Index (Ra): Provides information about the colour rendering of a light source and is based on of the colour rendering of an incandescent lamp, with the highest possible rating of Ra = 100. A Ra of 80 repre­sents good to very good colour rendering properties; Ra of 90 is an excellent colour rendering value and therefore the highest quality.

Light colour: The perceived colour of the light as described by colour temperature. A distinction is made between warm white, neutral white and daylight white. In living areas and similar settings the light colour warm white is preferred.

Colour temperature: Used to describe the colour of the light. Unit of measure: Kelvin (K). For example an incan­ descent lamp with 60 Watts has a colour temperature of 2700 K.

Equivalent to incandescent lamps: The terms luminous flux and colour rendering are still unfamiliar to many. For decades, the power consumption of incandescent lamps (in Watts) has been an indicator for brightness and there­fore, the equivalent of light bulbs is indicated on most LED lamps. Equivalences to incandescent lamps are stip­ulated in the EU-Regulation 244/2009 and 1194/2012. The perceived brightness of an LED lamp is dependant on the type of incandescent lamp replaced and the style of the application. Because many LED lamps emit their light in predominantly one direction, the amount of light shining on a surface (lux) can be more than that of an incandescent lamp of declared equivalence. Therefore, in certain ap­ plications, an LED lamp of lower declared equivalence can provide equally bright illumination.
